Panel upgrade in LA or OC? Bundle the load check with remodel, EV, or ADU plans
Electrical Planning
On Los Angeles and Orange County homes, panel upgrades often show up after another project has already started: an EV charger needs a dedicated circuit, an ADU needs its own loads reviewed, a kitchen is moving to induction, or a bathroom remodel adds ventilation, lighting, and GFCI protection. The better move is to check the full electrical plan before permits are split across separate jobs.
Before ordering equipment or scheduling utility coordination, confirm the existing service size, main breaker rating, available spaces, grounding and bonding condition, load calculation, meter location, and which future loads should be included now. If the project includes solar, battery backup, a heat pump water heater, garage conversion, or Level 2 charging, those decisions should be reviewed together so the new panel does not become undersized the next time work begins.
The practical sequence is project scope, load calculation, panel and meter review, permit path, utility coordination if needed, rough electrical, inspection, then reconnect and finish work. Energy Star Builders helps LA and OC homeowners coordinate panel upgrades with remodels, ADUs, and EV charging installs. Request a consult at esbrenovations.com/remodels or call (949) 763-3867.
